Bell call
The scene: Alexander Graham Bell's laboratory. An exciting new discovery is about to take place. In the next room sits Bell's assistant, a man named Watson, hard at work on Bell's new invention to transmit sound over wires. As Mr. Watson toiled away in the room with the receiver, it suddenly rings -- it must be Bell! He picks it up and hears "Good evening, sir. Are you paying too much for your long distance service?"

Today’s Sunday School Lesson:

Today’s Sermon:

Humility: The Passage to Joy
Philippians 2:1-11
Paul loves them dearly for their gift to him, and wants them to continue their spiritual growth. He shared with them his anxiety and burden about dying and rejoiced that his trial is helping others and causing the gospel to spread. He knows to live is Christ: not just part of his life, but all of his life. To die is gain: he has decided that it is God’s will that he remain to minister to them. He exhorts them to live within the limits of the gospel they have received, and do it to stand firm in one Spirit, so that they can withstand the opposition. He now develops the theme of humility and joy in suffering in the 2nd chapter with the example of Jesus Christ as the supreme example of the right mind-set we are to have in this life. The humility of Christ is the passage to joy for all of us.

“You don’t have to be afraid of praising God too much; unlike humans He never gets a big head.”
“Praise is almost the only thing we do on earth that we shall not cease to do in heaven.”
“It is always possible to be thankful for what is given rather than to complain about what is not given. One or the other becomes a habit of life.”

Sunday School Trap
The youth director had been trying for months to get the little boy down the street to come to church to be with his third grade Sunday school class. Finally after talking to the boy and his mother for what seemed to be the hundredth time the boy finally agreed to go this next Sunday, which he did and seemed to enjoy all of the proceedings except as the baptismal service began he ran out the back door and ran all the way home. His mother asked him why he ran home instead of riding with the youth minister. The little boy answered, "Its all a racket, They get you there and let you make all those nice things and tell you great stories just to get you relaxed so they can drown you at the end of one of the services.”

Today’s Sunday School Lesson:

The Life of David
II Samuel 17 Absalom’s Pursuit of David
Hushai counseled Absalom that it would be better for Absalom to wait until he could amass a large army from the north to the south and then attack. Absalom decided that Hushai’s advice was better than Ahithophel’s, which was David’s plan all along in leaving Hushai to adversely counsel Absalom.

Today’s Sermon:

Philippians 1:12-30 Rejoicing in Dilemmas
Preaching Christ from selfish ambition was possible in Paul’s thinking. He was thinking of those trying to divide rather than unite, to speak against him while he was in prison. Many preached Christ for personal advantage rather than from love of the truth, and many have done and are doing the same to this day. What is Paul’s conclusion to the ambition and greed of others? He concludes that if Christ is preached accurately, even though with selfish motives, he would rejoice. Paul would not rejoice if the gospel was being changed or perverted (Gal. 1:6-9), but if the gospel was accurately taught even with the bad motives of the messenger, Paul determined that it was a good thing.

Factory Supplies
At the end of my factory shift, I was asked to purchase some supplies. The machines' conveyor belts needed talcum powder to prevent them from sticking, and we had run out of aspirin for workers with noise induced tension headaches. I drove to the nearest store and loaded a shopping cart with four cases of baby powder and several boxes of aspirin. As the man behind me in the checkout line peered at my purchases, he laughed and exclaimed, "I'm glad that's your baby and not mine!"

Today’s Sunday School Lesson:

The Life of David
David’s Flight from Absalom II Samuel 16 and 17
The flight by David from Jerusalem revived the hope in some that there would be a return to the house of Saul. Since Saul’s family was Benjamite, this was seen favorably by the northern tribes as opposed to Judah (which David was) and those allied with him from the south. David had unified the kingdom but there was the tension between the two areas.

Today’s Sermon:

Philippians 1:3-11 Partners in Joy
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Paul gives thanks for them based on his memories. He forgot any bad times and put the good memories to the forefront. This letter was the most personal of Paul’s letters, in that every time he thought of them he thanked God for them.
