The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”

Sunday School Trap
The youth director had been trying for months to get the little boy down the street to come to church to be with his third grade Sunday school class. Finally after talking to the boy and his mother for what seemed to be the hundredth time the boy finally agreed to go this next Sunday, which he did and seemed to enjoy all of the proceedings except as the baptismal service began he ran out the back door and ran all the way home. His mother asked him why he ran home instead of riding with the youth minister. The little boy answered, "Its all a racket, They get you there and let you make all those nice things and tell you great stories just to get you relaxed so they can drown you at the end of one of the services.”

Today’s Sunday School Lesson:

The Life of David
II Samuel 17 Absalom’s Pursuit of David
Hushai counseled Absalom that it would be better for Absalom to wait until he could amass a large army from the north to the south and then attack. Absalom decided that Hushai’s advice was better than Ahithophel’s, which was David’s plan all along in leaving Hushai to adversely counsel Absalom.

Today’s Sermon:

Philippians 1:12-30 Rejoicing in Dilemmas
Preaching Christ from selfish ambition was possible in Paul’s thinking. He was thinking of those trying to divide rather than unite, to speak against him while he was in prison. Many preached Christ for personal advantage rather than from love of the truth, and many have done and are doing the same to this day. What is Paul’s conclusion to the ambition and greed of others? He concludes that if Christ is preached accurately, even though with selfish motives, he would rejoice. Paul would not rejoice if the gospel was being changed or perverted (Gal. 1:6-9), but if the gospel was accurately taught even with the bad motives of the messenger, Paul determined that it was a good thing.

Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. But mine eyes are unto Thee, O GOD the Lord: in Thee is my trust. Psalm 119:18; 121:1-2; 141:8
