Today’s Sermon
Ephesians Series: 6:10-17 The Armor of God
The very detailed and practical exhortations to husband/wife, child/parent and slave/master now broadens out to a more sweeping instruction; the word will be put to work in our lives by the power of the Spirit against the opposition, but only in the Lord’s strength and power. None of the practical exhortations in this letter could be put to work on their own. The “mighty power of God” will flow through us, not our own power.

The Book of Revelation: Revelation 11 and 12
The Two Witnesses
The two witnesses have a 3½ year ministry. They are clothed in sackcloth, representing a solemn prophetic ministry requiring the repentance of the people. These men are described as two olive trees (anointed ones) and two lampstands (bearing the light of the Word of God) referred to in Zechariah 4:12-14.
They have the power to: Kill their enemies with fire; Keep it from raining; Turn waters into blood; Bring plagues upon the earth; Harm others with the same harm they attempted to inflict on them

“WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me 'to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLIC THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

The Book of Revelation: Revelation 11
The Two Witnesses
John is given a “reed” and told to measure the temple, the altar and those that worshipped there. There will be a new temple constructed in Jerusalem at the beginning of the Tribulation period.
The specific time period of 42 months is given here, 3½ years. The event of the Gentiles dominating Jerusalem seems to occur in the last 3½ years of a general 7-year time period.
This chapter introduces the Two Witnesses, their ministry, and their martyrdom in Jerusalem.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians Series: 6:1-9
Wisdom at Home and at Work
A life filled with the Spirit (5:18) is a wise life in submission illustrated by the relationship of husband and wife. Husband and wife are a picture of Christ’s love for the church in submission and self-sacrifice. This metaphor continues in the teaching of wisdom at home and at work in the role of father-child and master-slave.
The issue of slavery and Christianity is a volatile one today, but the slavery that Paul was referring to referred to the Christian master with the Christian owner. Those hostile to Christianity today should be careful about criticizing the Bible because it does not condemn slavery while they sponsor and promote the death of millions of the unborn. They do not have the moral authority to criticize.

The Book of Revelation: Revelation 9-10
The Sixth Trumpet, the Angel and the Little Scroll
The loosing of the four angels results in an army of 200 million mounted troops. Although this number is not necessarily literal, there is no reason not to believe that the size of this army does not fit the modern army and population of Red China. The figure does display an overwhelming force that would strike fear into the heart of any world leader. John didn’t count what he saw; he was told the number.
Chapter 10 and 11 give additional background information to the judgments. This vision that begins here is continuous until 13:1. This interlude goes from Chapter 10 to 15 with the 7th Trumpet judgment included in 11:15-19.

Today’s Sermon
Walking in Wisdom in Real Life – Ephesians 5:22-23
Marriage, 5:22-23; Parents and children, 6:14; Masters and servants, 6:5-9
Paul has taught us to be wise by being filled with the Spirit. We are now told to apply this teaching to real life in our everyday relationships. Being filled with the Spirit is not an exclusive experience to being in church; it is only by the filling of the Spirit that life can be lived in a wise and moral way. This is exhibited in our daily relationships between husband and wife, children and parents, and bosses and employees. In each of these three most common relationships in our lives the first partner is told to be submissive and humble (5:22; 6:1, 5). But the second one is to show humility by acting like Christ in care and concern for the first. Both parties can achieve this by being individually committed to the Lord.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 5:15-21, Wisdom and Responsibility (The filling of the Spirit 5:15-18)
The entire section of “Walking in Wisdom” is from 5:15 to 6:9. “Wisdom and responsibility” is the subject of 5:15-21, with 5:15-18 emphasizing the filling of the Spirit. Starting in 5:22 to 6:9, wisdom and real life is taught in relationship to marriage (5:22-33); parents and children (6:1-4); and master and servants, 6:5-9. We are to walk in wisdom by living a responsible life that is precise in its carrying out of the will of God intelligently and wisely. What this life does not look like is drunkenness in its lack of control and restraint. This life is characterized by the filling of the Spirit in four expressions: communication with each other in music; singing to the Lord in personal relationship; giving thanks for all things to the Godhead; and submission to one another in humility.

The Book of Revelation: 7:9-17, 8
The Multitude of Martyrs and the Seven Trumpet Judgments
"After these things" introduces a new vision. The apostle John saw a group different from the 144,000 Jews. The contrasts between the groups are:
  1. This group is innumerable, not a definite number like 144,000.
  2. This group is '"from every nation." Redeemed Jews are evidently included since the word "kindreds" is literally '"tribes."
  3. They are described as wearing white "stoles" (not robes) and holding palms in their hands, depicting victory and joy.
  4. The great host is also different to the 144,000 as they are shown as ascribing praises to God and to the Lamb for their salvation (vs. 10). Thus the second half of the chapter demonstrates that many will be saved and come to Christ in the Tribulation period.

The Book of Revelation - Chapter 7: The 144,000 and Multitude of Martyrs
What is the purpose of these 144,000? Their purpose is to serve God throughout the Tribulation period and be witnesses for the Lord during this time. The multitude of martyrs now seen are those which came out of "great tribulation." This is literally translated "out of the tribulation, the great one." Christ spoke of this time in Matthew 24:21. It is appropriate to refer to this as a specific time period called "The Tribulation" based on this language. This multitude would represent all those martyred throughout the Tribulation period.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 5:1-14
Walking in Love: Walking in Light
  • In the same way Christ loved us and gave Himself, we also are to give ourselves to a life of love
  • Paul connects the idea of the sacrifice that Christ gave as the “sweet-smelling savor.” This refers to the “fragrant odor” of the Old Testament sacrifice when properly done and acceptable to God
  • Once we were of the darkness, but now we are light “in the Lord”
  • Now that we are in the Lord who is light we are now the light and are to live consistent with light
  • Our very nature is now one of light; it is the presence of light within us in the indwelling Holy Spirit which makes it possible to live a life that reflects the light from within
  • Without salvation, this would not be possible

The other man had a leisurely lunch and took several breaks during the day. At the end of the day, the challenger was surprised and annoyed to find that the other fellow had chopped substantially more wood than he had.
"I don't get it," he said. "Every time I checked, you were taking a rest, yet you chopped more wood than I did."
"But you didn't notice," said the winning woodsman, "that I was sharpening my ax when I sat down to rest." Source Unknown

The Book of Revelation: 6:9-11

In the fifth seal the scene shifts from earth to heaven and John sees a vision of those who will be martyred for their faith in Christ.

They are described as being under the altar, in keeping with the fact that the blood of the sacrifices of the Old Testament was poured out under the altar (Exodus 29: 12; Lev. 4:7). Who are these people? They cannot be martyrs of the Church Age; for they were raptured before the judgments of the tribulation began. They must be those martyred during the first months of the tribulation when the judgments of the first four seals were being poured out.

The Book of Revelation: Chapter 6
The events of the tribulation period climaxed with the second phase of the second coming of Christ in chapter 19:11-16. The pre-millennial position portrays the events of these chapters as future, that is, "the things which shall be hereafter" (1: 19), and that the translation of the church has already taken place 0 The breaking of the seals as described in this lesson does not occur until the saints of God are gathered around the throne in glory as visualized in the introductory chapters 4-5.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 4:17-23. Walking in Renewal
Before we can live (“walk”) in renewal, we must have been renewed by Christ. Our unity was established by the Spirit of God, and then we were asked to show that unity in our living, to “walk.” Now we are asked to walk in the renewal of thinking and behavior that the presence of the Spirit of God has made possible. Given the environment in which the Ephesian Christians lived this was a tall order; however, their pagan society gave them good examples of what walking in renewal was not, so that they would know what a holy and renewed life actually was.

The Book of Revelation: Chapter 5
The New Song ascribes worship to the one who is worthy to take the book and open the seals. This worthiness is based on His redemptive work of death on the cross providing salvation for all people of all tribes and tongues. These are the ones who can be "kings and priests" who will reign on the earth; that is, believers.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 4:7-16. Keeping the Unity: Ephesians Four divides into 3 sections: 4:1-6, Walking in Unity; 4:7-16, Keeping the Unity; and 4:17-32, Walking in Renewal. Gifts were given as a celebration of Christ’s victory over death and hell, and as a blessing to us because now all men can receive victory over death and hell. Since we now can have eternal life, Christ has given us gifts to use to glorify Him in this life. In addition, the gifts are used to speak the truth to all men so they can then turn to Christ and realize the gifts they have been given. They are an integral part of the plan of God to spread His gospel and kingdom in this age.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Revelation: Chapter 4-5
4:10-11 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
The Book of Revelation contains 14 expressions of praise called “Doxologies.” The references for these doxologies are: 4:8; 4:11; 5:9-10; 5:12; 5:13; 7;10; 7:12; 11:16-18; 15:3-4; 16:5-6; 16:7; 19:1-3; 19:4; and 19:6-8. A "doxology" is an expression of praise to God; Gk. "doxos," "glory,", "logos," "study" or "word." It is a study of the glory of God.
God the Father receives the praise here for His creating and sustaining power over the universe. The four living creatures and the 24 elders combine in this praise. The elders cast their crowns at the feet of the Father, symbolizing that all rewards the saints will receive in heaven will be given back to the glory of the Father. He is the Sovereign One, with the right and the ability to bring to pass all the events to be revealed.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 3:14-21
Paul’s Prayer – To know that which is beyond knowing
After declaring his purpose in ministry that was aligned with the eternal purpose of God in bringing Jew and Gentile together in the church, Paul now prays for them to be one not only in the plan of God but in their actual experiences together. In order to live together they needed to know as much as possible of the love of Christ which is truly beyond human comprehension except through the internal working of the Holy Spirit.
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH - August 24, 2008

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH
August 24, 2008

The Freedom Baptist Church is an unaffiliated, independent Baptist church located in Colorado Springs, CO. The church’s pastor is Greg A. Chandler, a 1978 graduate of the Independent Baptist College in Dallas, TX (school now located in Fort Worth). Greg is a bi-vocational pastor who works full-time at another job while administering the church. The church is primarily Baptist in doctrine and practice but independent in its function. We belong to no group or association of churches under any name. We enjoy fellowship with like-minded believers as we meet them in our community and around the world. The purpose of this church is to meet together to honor and glorify God in fulfilling its Biblical mission of: worshiping God in Spirit and in truth; encouraging one another in genuine fellowship; teaching the Scriptures in depth; and sharing the gospel with people that the members of the church come in contact. We seek to fulfill our purpose with grace, relevance, and authenticity in full adherence to the principles of the Word of God. Small churches can have an impact on the community and the world by living authentically in agreement with the infallible Word of God. It is our prayer that if the Lord directs your spiritual journey to come into contact with us that you will come to know the Lord in a deeper way because the Freedom Baptist Church was there. At the very least, we hope to do you no harm in your journey. Pastor Greg Chandler

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Revelation: beginning in Chapter 4
4:1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter.
The messages to the Seven Churches changes dramatically. This change is connected to the messages to the churches in that the churches can look forward to the trumpet call of the Lord to declare that the church age will one day come to an end and the Lord will call them to “come up here.” From “the things which are,” the Lord now reveals to John “the things which must be hereafter.”
The church exists today to prepare itself for the future. What the church does today will be what the church will do for eternity before the Lord: worship Him. The church has no higher call than to worship as this chapter will declare.

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
An Exciting Dinner: The small girl had recently received a new watch and some perfume, which she was very excited about. Their family asked the pastor over for dinner. The girl wanted so badly to tell the pastor about her new gifts, but her mother insisted she wait until after dinner and not interrupt at meal time. Not able to contain her excitement, and not wanting to disobey, the little girl leaned over to the pastor during dinner and whispered, "If you hear a little noise and smell something, it's me!"

On the other hand, show mercy to others but with the fear of being defiled by them in their apostasy, hating the apostasy that has defiled them and may defile you if you are not respectful and in fear of it.”

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 2:8-10 Children of Grace
There is something that disturbs God even under His grace, and that is boasting in self while being completely dependent on His kindness. Our boasting, confidence and sufficiency is based completely on our glorying in Christ for what He has done for us. There are two groups – children of wrath and children of grace. All people are or once were children of wrath. Only the saved are children of grace. Therefore we have compassion and courteous concern for those who are what we once were. We understand their condition and appreciate their potential under His grace.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 2
“But God” is the Difference - This chapter answers questions for the saved Jews and Gentiles in Ephesus regarding their unity in the church. Paul used the means of salvation, grace, to teach them of their coming together. The reason why people of all walks of life regardless of background or ethnic group can come together in the church is that we all are the same: sinners saved by grace. The fact of grace makes us all equal. Verses 2:1-7 are all one long sentence from Paul.

Jude advises them to remember the teachings of the apostles regarding those who would mock the truth. Paul did this in major portions of his writings. Peter had said the same thing in II Peter 3:3. When a teacher starts to make light of the teachings on the return of Christ an alarm ought to go off.

The blessings Paul prays are ours already and can be realized more fully through knowing God as personally and intimately as possible. This prayer reveals how well Paul knew God and God new Paul.

The false teachers use complaining, criticism, ridicule, lust and desire, arrogance, manipulation and flattery to get their way
14-15: And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Verses 10-13: Apostates are nothing new
Jude gives three illustrations of empty religion by using 3 Old Testament examples. “Core” is the Greek spelling of the Hebrew “Korah.”
The way of Cain – Cain offers the fruit of man’s work (Genesis 4:3-8) in order to gain acceptance with God rather than the way of God in sacrifice.
The error of Balaam refers to the teacher of God whose allegiance could be bought, with a compelling and consuming desire to gain some part of the world at any cost (Numbers 31:16).
The rebellion of Korah presumed that the people had no need for Moses and Aaron, and rebelled against any authority God laid out. He stated they were worthwhile enough to do all of it their way, even in the name of God (Numbers 16:1-3, 31-35). In declaring that they had no need for Moses or Aaron they were saying they had no need for God’s way of doing things. Korah and his followers were met with destruction.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 1:10-14
To Praise of His Glory
God’s eternal purpose is driven by His love for us as revealed in Ephesians One. To know God’s love is to know His character, and to know Him closely will reveal His character in us. He saved us not only for our sake but for His glory. His plan of salvation is so glorious that it reveals His glory and glorifies Him in us. All parts of His plan glorify Him and is also best for us.
There is something great going on within us. Life for believers is more than a series of actions that yield an opposite reaction: either a mistake that yields negative consequences or an action that yields good things. For us there is freedom and responsibility to make the right decisions, working together with the plan and purpose of God. However, there is something more going on. There are still consequences to our actions, but there is grace to make these things excel for good. There are still blessings that come from responsible decisions, but those blessings are always more than what we deserve by God’s grace. There are also blessings that come simply by being God’s child that comes by no action of our own. Now, which would you rather be, lost and a prisoner to your talents and abilities, or saved and have the power of God working above and beyond your own abilities.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Verses 10-13: Apostates are nothing new
Verse 10: In contrast to Michael, the false teachers engaged in verbal revilings of things they did not understand. They only understood their own instincts, feelings, and animal desires. The Gnostics were so corrupt that they were not able to understand higher and spiritual things, becoming weak and ignorant in their understanding (which was the opposite of what they thought they were). Those who thought they were so spiritual in their use of angelic beings in their religious experience actually denigrated them.

Today’s Sermon
When Kings Will Worship the King of Kings - Daniel 4
The kingdoms of this world will be brought into subjection to Jesus Christ by God. “Every knee shall bow” is not a poem; it is a promise.
There is no reason to engage in hand-wringing over the current state of affairs; they are serious enough to pray for and certainly we should vote, but things are not so serious that we cannot be at peace.

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH - June 22, 2008

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH
June 22, 2008

The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Apostates of the Present – Verses 8-10
Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. He refers now to “filthy dreamers,” returning to the apostates within the church from the apostates of the past. These were “vile” dreamers of the Gnostic faith who used visions and dreams as a way of stating that they were directed by angelic beings (Col. 2:18). The Gnostic false teachers were described by Jude as polluters of their bodies like those in Sodom and Gomorrah. The Gnostic teaching on the separation of body and soul led them to extremely wicked acts in their bodies, and Jude compares them accurately to the Sodomites.

Today’s Sermon
Get Wisdom – Getting Through the Storm
Proverbs 4:18-27 and Luke 6:45-49
The wise advice of a father can guide our lives with sureness and stability. Wisdom is the way of light, but it requires an intense focus. Wisdom is a lady that is worth pursuing and will result in honor and exaltation for us. Wisdom will not betray us. The examples provided at the end of Proverbs 4 and in one of the sermons of Jesus provide further reinforcement to our pursuit of wisdom. Go get it!
