Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Directions for Contending: vs. 17-25, Remember Your Instructions; vs. 17-19
Jude advises them to remember the teachings of the apostles regarding those who would mock the truth. Paul did this in major portions of his writings. Peter had said the same thing in II Peter 3:3. When a teacher starts to make light of the teachings on the return of Christ an alarm ought to go off.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 1:15-23, Paul’s Prayer for Us
Verses 15-23 are all one sentence. The ideas flow together in one outburst of love and concern, not just for the Ephesian church, but for all believers of all time. We are contained in this prayer. The blessings Paul prays are ours already and can be realized more fully through knowing God as personally and intimately as possible. This prayer reveals how well Paul knew God and God new Paul.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Verses 10-13: Apostates are nothing new
Jude gives three illustrations of empty religion by using 3 Old Testament examples. “Core” is the Greek spelling of the Hebrew “Korah.”
The way of Cain – Cain offers the fruit of man’s work (Genesis 4:3-8) in order to gain acceptance with God rather than the way of God in sacrifice.
The error of Balaam refers to the teacher of God whose allegiance could be bought, with a compelling and consuming desire to gain some part of the world at any cost (Numbers 31:16).
The rebellion of Korah presumed that the people had no need for Moses and Aaron, and rebelled against any authority God laid out. He stated they were worthwhile enough to do all of it their way, even in the name of God (Numbers 16:1-3, 31-35). In declaring that they had no need for Moses or Aaron they were saying they had no need for God’s way of doing things. Korah and his followers were met with destruction.

Today’s Sermon
Ephesians 1:10-14
To Praise of His Glory
God’s eternal purpose is driven by His love for us as revealed in Ephesians One. To know God’s love is to know His character, and to know Him closely will reveal His character in us. He saved us not only for our sake but for His glory. His plan of salvation is so glorious that it reveals His glory and glorifies Him in us. All parts of His plan glorify Him and is also best for us.
There is something great going on within us. Life for believers is more than a series of actions that yield an opposite reaction: either a mistake that yields negative consequences or an action that yields good things. For us there is freedom and responsibility to make the right decisions, working together with the plan and purpose of God. However, there is something more going on. There are still consequences to our actions, but there is grace to make these things excel for good. There are still blessings that come from responsible decisions, but those blessings are always more than what we deserve by God’s grace. There are also blessings that come simply by being God’s child that comes by no action of our own. Now, which would you rather be, lost and a prisoner to your talents and abilities, or saved and have the power of God working above and beyond your own abilities.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
The Book of Jude: Contending Earnestly for the Faith
Verses 10-13: Apostates are nothing new
Verse 10: In contrast to Michael, the false teachers engaged in verbal revilings of things they did not understand. They only understood their own instincts, feelings, and animal desires. The Gnostics were so corrupt that they were not able to understand higher and spiritual things, becoming weak and ignorant in their understanding (which was the opposite of what they thought they were). Those who thought they were so spiritual in their use of angelic beings in their religious experience actually denigrated them.

When the LORD shall build up Zion, He shall appear in His glory. He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. For He hath looked down from the height of His sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth; To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem.
