FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH - December 30, 2007

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH
December 30, 2007
Today’s Sunday School Lesson
New Testament Postcards, I John 3 - The completeness of salvation renders permanent out relationship with God the Father (sons of God) and makes certain our future relationship with Christ (we shall be like Him). This is based on the love of God for us. This goes along with the anointing of the Spirit (2:20-27) that is also permanent. Because of this, fellowship with Him is practical each day of our saved life, for we have hope that drives us to Christ in daily relationship (because of the world, 2:17-18).
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 12:12-31, The Synchronicity of Spiritual Gifts - Self-indulgence in the personal expression of spiritual gifts is an ugly thing to God and leads to rivalries and division in the church. God designed the gifts to be varied and yet synchronized by the Holy Spirit who gave them for the greater good of the body of Christ.

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
New Testament Postcards I John 2:20-29, “Unction” is the word for “anointing,” the substance of the anointing, the ointment. The “Holy One” is the Holy Spirit. The New Testament “priest” is anointed with the Spirit once, when he is inducted into the office of believer-priest at salvation. The Old Testament priests were only anointed once when they were inducted into their office, therefore we are only anointed once with the Holy Spirit.

Dealing with the Antichrists – one of the characteristics of the end of the world is apostasy
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 11:17-
Christian Freedom and the Practice of the Lord’s Supper
The Corinthians had fallen into the same error on the Lord’s Supper as they had on all the issues presented by Paul in this letter. Remember that Paul was answering questions posed to him by a group from the church as well as addressing issues that he knew were problems for them. The Lord’s Supper was one of those problems, along with incest, lawsuits, marriage, eating meat offered to idols, spiritual gifts, the worship service, and the resurrection.
The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Executive Approval: For many years I worked as a receptionist and switchboard operator at a busy company. After a good annual review, my supervisor told me I was up for a raise, pending approval of the vice president. A month later, my supervisor called me into his office and told me the VP had refused to approve the raise. His reason? I clearly wasn't doing my job. Every time he saw me, I was either chatting with someone in the lobby or talking on the phone.

I Corinthians 11:2-16
Christian Freedom and the Practice of Worship - Paul now discusses their freedom in Christ in relationship to their worship within the church. They were again exceeding responsible behavior in the way they were practicing their worship services in the church. Again the Corinthians took their freedom too far and were exhibiting carnality, this time from within the church in their worship services.

Close fellowship with Christ causes love to flow to the brethren, indeed, only by the Spirit (His fruit) in a yielded believer could there be genuine, true love for the brethren.

Insured Voice: The choir director of a large church choir bragged before the congregation in a booming, bellowing voice: "Two years ago I insured my voice with Lloyds of London for $750,000." He was escorting the suspect to the office in the front of the store (near the cash registers), when the shoplifter broke from his grip and tried to run. We have not received the new lease yet, but an e-mail from the landlord this week indicates that the increase per month will be about the same as before; approximately $66/month per year (a 4.5% increase). Since we sent out our letter in March of this year, we have not had to draw from our savings account to meet our expenses and have had an over $66/month surplus each month. Therefore we would be able to maintain as a church over the next three-year lease term. Please pray and discuss this with each other. When I have a copy of the new lease I will confirm these numbers. New Testament Postcards: I John 1:6-10, Christ is constantly cleansing us from all sin (Present tense verbs here). Therefore a condition of fellowship with God not only requires a life consistent with His nature, but also requires the constant exposing of sins, both known and unknown, by the very God who is Light. It also includes the confession of sin which results in the constant cleansing of us by Christ. So the closer your walk with God the more aware you will be of your sins.

Two ladies were sitting in a living room, waiting for their hostess, who was slightly delayed. The daughter of the family was with them, on the theory that she would keep the visitors occupied during the wait. The child was about six years old, snub nosed, freckled, buck toothed and bespectacled. She maintained a deep silence and the two ladies peered doubtfully at her. Finally, one of them muttered to the other, "Not very p-r-e-t-t-y, I fear," carefully spelling the key word. Whereupon the child piped up, "But awfully s-m-a-r-t."

A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?" "I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill." The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

Honeymoon Alone: On a visit to my wife's native England for our honeymoon, we arrived at London's Gatwick Airport. Tania headed for the British passport control line while I, an American, waited in the foreigners' line. When my turn came, the customs officer asked me the purpose of my visit. "Pleasure," I replied. "I'm on my honeymoon." The officer looked first to one side of me, then the other. "That's very interesting, sir," he said as he stamped my passport. "Most men bring their wives with them."

Foreigners: The truck driver looked suspiciously at the soup he had just been served in an eatery. It contained dark flecks of seasoning, but two of the spots were suspicious. "Hey," he called out to the waitress, "these particles in my soup, aren't they foreign objects?" She scrutinized his bowl. "No, sir!" she reassured him. "Those things live around here."

New Testament Postcards: Philemon 21-25, Paul’s Confidence in Philemon - With full confidence in your obedience I write this to you, knowing that you will do even more than what I ask.
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 6:12-20, What’s A Body to Do? - For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
As believers in Christ and with the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are joined to the Lord in one spirit, therefore we cannot join our bodies to another unless it is sanctioned by God, and that is only in the marriage relationship.
The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Country Tunes: My wife and I were browsing in a crafts store when I noticed a display of country-style musical instruments. After looking over the flutes, dulcimers and recorders, I picked up a shiny, one-stringed instrument I took to be a mouth harp. I put it to my lips and, much to the amusement of other shoppers, twanged a few notes on it. After watching from a distance, my wife came up and whispered in my ear, "I hate to tell you this, honey, but you're trying to play a cheese slicer."

New Testament Postcards: Philemon 18-25 - If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account.
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 6:1-11: Obsessed with Being Right - Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? Once we understand our position in Christ and our surrender to the truth, and that doing what is in the best interests of Jesus Christ rather than ourselves is the highest priority of our lives, then minor disputes have no legs; they are resolved easily.
The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Sermon Sub: A minister was called away unexpectedly by the illness of a close family member. He entrusted his new assistant with filling the pulpit. The Pastor's wife stayed home. When he returned, the minister asked his wife what she thought of the young man's sermon. "The poorest I've ever heard," she said. "There was nothing in it, nothing at all. It didn't even make sense. It was very unorganized. I was disappointed." Later that day, the concerned minister met his assistant and asked him, "How'd the Sunday service and sermon go? Did all go well? How did you manage?" "All went very well, sir, absolutely wonderful," he said. "I didn't have time to prepare a new sermon of my own on such short notice, so I got on your computer and pulled up one of your old sermons from last year."

Today’s Sunday School Lesson
New Testament Postcards: Philemon 12-18, Paul pleads with Philemon to forgive Onesimus and accept him back. Paul was sending Onesimus back just as if he was sending himself. This is the way Christians ought to speak to each other, with the right characterization of the situation according to Scripture and in accepting responsibility for what we are asking each other to do.

Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 5, No Man is an Island: Sin’s Pervasive Power to Pollute - Both God and the world expects the church to be holy. The allowance of flagrant and public sin to continue without discipline in the church pollutes us all. Even the world recoils at our unwillingness to confront and discipline. In this chapter Paul calls on the Corinthians to remove the immorality from their midst in order to bring the church back to holiness.

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Beware of Bear
Vacationing in Alaska, I couldn't help but notice all the warnings about bears posted in campgrounds, visitors' centers and rest areas advising people not to feed the bears, how to avoid bears, what to do if a bear sees you, what to do if a bear attacks, and so on. My favorite, however, was a hand-lettered sign on the door of a small gas station in a remote area. It said: "Warning! If you are being chased by a bear, don't come in here!"

An exasperated Mr. Smith awoke at ten the following morning and rolled stiffly out of bed to see a note on his bedside table: "It's six! Get out of bed!"

Today’s Sermon: I Corinthians 3:187-23, The Foolishness of Worshipping Men - Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Today we will hear from a representative of the Gideons, Gus Clement. We have heard from various Gideons over the years, but it is still very important for us to hear about the work that God is doing through His Word around the world and that He is still changing lives today. The ministry of the Gideons is an important one and is consistent with the beliefs of this church regarding the necessity of the Scriptures in the spreading of the gospel. By supporting the ministry of the Gideons as you are led we play a vital role in spreading the Word of God. We will receive a love offering for their ministry after the services today.

The Purpose of Physics: One day a professor was discussing a particularly complicated concept. A pre-med student rudely interrupted to ask "Why do we have to study this stuff?" "It keeps the ignoramuses out of medical school," replied the professor.

Passion for Hunting
I love the outdoors, and because of my passion for hunting and fishing, my family eats a considerable amount of wild game. Today’s Sunday School Lesson: The Life of Elisha - Elisha at Damascus - II Kings 8:7-15
We next find Elisha at Damascus, where he went to anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. Benhadad was ill and sent Hazael with a present to inquire of Elisha, “Will I recover from this sickness?” The answer of Elisha contained the unmistakable conclusion, “The Lord has shown me that he will certainly die.” Elisha told him that he would be king and bring great evil upon the children of Israel. Hazael returned and told the king that the prophet had predicted his recovery. That was the last day of Benhadad’s life, for the next day he was smothered, and Hazael reigned in his place (8:7-15).

Today’s Sermon: I Corinthians 2:11-3:4 - From Milk to Solid Food
These are the carnal Christians. They also did not know the deep things of God, not because they could not know them, but because their worldly philosophies and trust in human wisdom prevented them from knowing them. They only saw “the tip of the iceberg.” They were babes in Christ and carnal in their lives.

Roof Chicken: One day a State Trooper was pulling off an expressway. When he turned onto the street at the end of the ramp, he noticed someone at a chicken place getting into his car. The driver placed the bucket of chicken on top of his car, got in and drove off with the bucket still on top of his car. So the trooper decided to pull him over and perform a community service by giving the driver his chicken. So he pulled him over, walked up to the car, pulled the bucket off the roof and offered it to the driver. The driver looked at the trooper and said, "No thanks, I just bought some."

Today’s Sunday School Lesson: The Life of Elisha – II Kings 7
The lepers discovery and Elisha’s prophecy fulfilled. The officer assisting the king found the prophecy of the famine lifting incredible. His retort expressed his utter disbelief that God would or could do this. Elisha replied that the officer would see the miracle with his own eyes; it would indeed take place. But because of his unbelief he would not experience the blessing.

Today’s Sermon: I Corinthians 2:1-16 - The World’s Wisdom vs. God’s Spirit
The wisdom of this world leads to futility and failure, especially morally. Moral failure leads to disappointment, disillusionment and depression. To violate morals is to spiritually come apart at the seams which will in turn lead to emotional breakdowns and cause hurt and pain to ourselves and others. The wisdom of God brings these things into balance with a life that is spiritually fulfilling and helpful and loving to others

“The saints at the same time as they are righteous are also sinners; righteous because they believe in Christ, whose righteousness covers them and is imputed to them, but sinners because they do not fulfill the Law, and not without licentiousness, and are like sick men under the care of a physician; they are sick in fact but healthy in hope and in the fact that they are beginning to be healthy, that is, they are “being healed.” They are people for whom the worst possible thing is the presumption that they are healthy, because they suffer a worse relapse.” Martin Luther, “Luther’s Works”

Today’s Sunday School Lesson: The Life of Elisha - I Kings 6-7
A famine resulted in Elisha’s life being threatened by King Joram. Joram did not realize that Elisha was the solution to his problems and not the source. “May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today” (6:31).

Today’s Sermon: I Corinthians 1:18-31 - From Nobodies to Somebodies
The “wisdom of the world” does not lead to God but to moving away from God. Humanism will never place any emphasis on anything other then man as god. We dare not trust the sweetest frame of this world, but only to wholly lean on Jesus’ name. The world through its own self-defined wisdom cannot find God, and God is very happy to save us with a message that the world finds foolish, yet God reveals is profound. The cross is the power of God that saves us from ourselves.

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Acts 2:38 - An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, "STOP! Acts 2:38!" (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a Scripture to you." "Scripture?" replied the burglar. "She said she had an Ax and Two 38's!"

The Seven Laws of Parenting
  1. The later you stay up, the earlier your child will wake up the next morning.
  2. For a child to become clean, something else must become dirty.
  3. Toys multiply to fill any space available.
  4. The longer it takes you to make a meal, the less your child will like it.
  5. The surest way to get something done is to tell a child not to do it.
  6. The gooier the food, the more likely it is to end up on the carpet.
  7. Backing the car out of the driveway causes your child to have to go to the bathroom.

Today’s Sermon: Our Place in this World I Corinthians 1:10-25
The Corinthians were certainly status conscious and concerned about their own position in life based on their emphasis of who baptized them. Their pride caused them to place their own thoughts above the truth of the gospel they had been taught. They were replacing the truth with their own understandings; therefore Paul would bring them back to the cross so that they would understand where they had come from and that they were still under its shadow.

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Flu Prayer
A young boy called the pastor of a local "corner" church to ask the pastor to come by to pray for his mother who had been very ill with the flu. The pastor knew the family and was aware they had been attending another church down the road. So the pastor asked, "Shouldn't you be asking Brother Simon down the road to come by to pray with your mom?"
The young boy replied, "Yeah, but we didn't want to take the chance that he might catch whatever it is that Mom has."

Today’s Sunday School Lesson: The Life of Elisha: Gehazi’s Greed I Kings 5:19-27
Gehazi became greedy of what Naaman had offered to give Elisha. Evidently he justified his greed by reasoning that since Naaman was an Aramean, a natural enemy of Israel, he should at least be taken advantage of. His greed led to his downfall.

Today’s Sermon: A Quilting Party Gone Bad I Corinthians 1:1-17
We are elected, enriched and established in our Christian lives here in Colorado Springs, having the good fortune to live in a place of beauty with a large Christian presence and a great deal of prosperity and grace surrounding us, just in the scenery and climate alone. However, this also is a breeding ground for flaming carnality. God doesn’t ask each church to be a quilt of one pattern or color; He loves diversity, but the diverse parts of the quilt make up one whole. There can be no compromise on our essential “quiltness.”

From Corinth to Colorado Springs: Reforming the Carnal Church
Acts 18: I Corinthians 1:1-9 Exposition of I Corinthians
Paul traveled from Athens to Corinth during his second missionary journey and ministered to the city there for 18 months. During that time a church was formed that became the example of worldly and compromising Christianity for all time. In reality the church at Corinth was not all that different from the church in Colorado Springs. A beautiful place where people were wealthy and prosperous forms a fertile breeding ground for unhealthy Christianity.

A Nation’s Test
The moral decline of a nation can be traced back to its religious beliefs. Pagan societies have come and gone. Rome, at one time an invincible force, crumbled from within because of moral decay. Countless individuals with godly moral values think their opinions do not count for much. However, they are very wrong. How does a nation – America or any other – become spiritually torn and tattered? It is simple; the people who are the very heart of any country’s life give up and give in to mounting pressure to compromise what they know is right. In real life, a very small percentage of people want certain godless statutes installed. Yet if a nation’s majority wavers in confusion, more than likely these issues will face little debate. We must stand for what we believe, asking God for His direction morally and spiritually. Charles Stanley

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
Two men working in a factory were talking. "I know how to get some time off," said one. "How are you going to do that?" "Watch," he said, and climbed up on a rafter. The foreman asked what he was doing up there, and the man replied. "I'm a light bulb." "I think you need some time off," the foreman said, and the first man walked out of the factory. After a moment, the second man followed him. "Where do you think you're going?" the foreman shouted. "I can't work in the dark," he said.

This Elisha caused (In his absence, II Kings 4:5) to multiply until the widow had filled with it all the vessels she could borrow.
