FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH - April 27, 2008

FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH
April 27, 2008
Church Items
We have a new letter from missionary Larry Morgan which details the death of his son Shane and granddaughter Kalee in an automobile accident February 13. Please be in prayer for this long-time missionary.
We thank Darrel, Johnie and Ron for handling the services last week in our absence. We had a great trip to Alaska but suffered from the cold and flu on our return. We would much rather have been at church last week than be sick, that’s for sure. However, we are on the mend and are glad to be back in church today. Again, thanks for understanding and we are grateful for all that kept things going in our absence.
Maria and friends have been handling the church cleaning for several months in finishing their school volunteer service, however Maria is about to graduate and therefore we will need to go back to our rotation on the church cleaning. We need a cleaning family for May and beyond. We are grateful for all the work that Maria has done and congratulate her on her coming graduation.
Ruth and I are grateful for your prayers in the loss of her grandmother on April 6.On behalf of our friends Jim and Aundi Woolard thank the church for their prayers and support in the passing of Ben Woolard on April 7.

The Sarah Corner – “And Sarah laughed”
How to Get Rich: A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money. The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, "Well, son, it was 1932, the depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents. The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 PM for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $3.50. Then my wife's father died and left us ten million dollars."

II John, Love Has Its Limits. II John was most likely written immediately after I John. It was written to a woman who had a church meeting in her house. Her home was the focal point of this church, and therefore she had influence in housing and choosing traveling preachers. Her love required some discernment, and this little letter teaches us to do the same thing. “The Elder” is John; the letter was written late, appx. 95AD.
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 16:1-4, Abounding in the Work of the Lord-Principles for Giving. Paul had been diligent to collect money for poor believers in Palestine because of a famine there. This was part of his purpose in traveling to churches and he was very desperate to get back to Jerusalem with the offering. This naturally led to a discussion of the giving practices of the Corinthian church (which no doubt was severely lacking in quality and quantity) and how Paul requested offerings for the needy in the family of God.

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion a foundation stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be dismayed. And we are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. For other foundation can no man lay that that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Isa 28:16; Eph. 2:20; I Cor. 3:11

We Shall not all Sleep….. The minister gave his Sunday morning service, as usual, but this particular Sunday, it was considerably longer than normal. Later, at the door, shaking hands with parishioners as they moved out, one man said, "Your sermon, Pastor, was simply wonderful - so invigorating and inspiring and refreshing." The minister of course, broke out in a big smile, only to hear the man say, "Why I felt like a new man when I woke up!"

New Testament Postcards - I John 5:16-17
The Sin Unto Death - The sin here is a severe commission of sins that has resulted from a carnal and ignored relationship with Christ. No one seeking to abide in Him can reach this state. But there can be the final event, after years of ignoring a practiced relationship with Christ; the commission of that sin that finally “crosses the line” of God’s grace. As in the case of Ananias and Saphira, God must take that believer home. (I Cor. 11:29-30; Acts 5:1-11) Do not pray that a brother be removed by God. Always pray for restoration (Gal. 6:10).
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 15:50-58
The Resurrection of the Living - Facts breed questions: Is there proof of the resurrection? Yes: there is historical, logical, theological and practical proof. If Christ rose again, we also shall rise again. But what kind of body will we have? How is this body achieved? Verse 23 mentioned Christ coming “in order” (“But every man in his own order”). What is this order? What about those alive when He comes? In the previous section we learned that the resurrection body will be a spiritual body (“as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly” vs. 49). The spiritual one, Christ, will change our bodies into glorified bodies by His spiritual power. Our bodies will be like “His body.” (“It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption” vs. 42)

Scripture Reading
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed; In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Silent Descent: Teddy came thundering down the stairs, much to his father's annoyance. "Teddy," he called, "how many more times have I got to tell you to come downstairs quietly? Now, go back upstairs and come down like a civilized human being." There was a silence, and Teddy reappeared in the front room. "That's better," said his father, "now in future will you always come down stairs like that." "Suits me," said Teddy. "I slid down the railing."
Today’s Sunday School Lesson
New Testament Postcards - I John 5:15-17, If He hears us in whatever we ask, then we know He knows our requests, and He answers them; not always as we pray but as we would ask if we were wiser. Notice also the promise here: not that He “gives” it, but that He “hears” it. We have our requests given to us as we would pray if we were wiser. We have the assurance that whatever He gives in response to our prayers is according to His desires and will not be bad for us. To quote Shakespeare,” “We, ignorant of ourselves, beg often our own harms/which the wise powers deny us for our good/so find profit by losing of our prayers.”
Today’s Sermon
I Corinthians 15:35-49, Shining Star for You to See, What Your Light can Truly Be
There are questions about our resurrection. It is a proven fact historically, logically, theologically and practically. But how is this going to happen? Facts sometimes breed questions.
We know some Corinthians denied the resurrection of Christ and their own resurrection. Paul seems to be answering an imaginary questioner in this section. These questions represent what some Corinthians objections were to the resurrection. Paul answered these questions with the analogy of the seed, the analogy from creation, the contrast of lesser to the greater in earthly and astronomical bodies, and the contrast of Adam to Christ.

How to Train a Cat: Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post. "Don't worry," my husband reassured me. "I'll have him trained in no time." I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained" our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach him a lesson. The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.
